MerleFest on the Road

with The Way Down Wanderers, The Barefoot Movement & Andy May

MerleFest on the Road is an ensemble show with a rotating cast of past and present MerleFest artists selected to represent the festival's mission of celebrating "traditional plus music." The show tours the South in late winter every year to highlight the artists and to promote the popular Americana music festival founded by the legendary Doc Watson. 2017 marks the 30th celebration of MerleFest. About 80,000 music lovers attend the festival over the course of four days each April. The MerleFest artists for the 2018 show are The Way Down Wanderers, The Barefoot Movement and Andy May.

THE WAY DOWN WANDERERS:
Equal parts fast-paced and soulful, 5-piece modern-folk Americana act, The Way Down Wanderers, draw listeners in with energy, originality and soulful generosity. Playing, performing and writing together for just 3 short years, the Wanderers have built an enthusiastic and fast-growing following. Youthful and professionally trained, these young men captivate audiences with soaring instrumentals, foot stomping sing-alongs and a lively stage show and have created a buzz for themselves with their unplugged, off-stage encores and propensity for performing self-titled, "restSTOMPS" - free acoustic sets at rest & truck stops along their tour routes. The band's debut, self-titled album, produced by Mike Marsh of the Avett Brothers and recorded at Sonic Ranch in El Paso TX, is now available wherever music is sold.

THE BAREFOOT MOVEMENT:
Heartfelt, energetic, and down home. Heralded by CMT Edge as "one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene," the music of the Nashville based group The Barefoot Movement is as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back, relax, take your shoes off, and stay a while. With two full length albums, an EP of traditional music, several cross-country tours, and appearances at some of the top bluegrass festivals in the United States already under their belt, the possibilities for this act are endless. The group has enjoyed almost non-stop touring including a trip to Burkina Faso, Africa where they were guests of the American Embassy, and in September of 2014, they received a Momentum Award, naming them "Band of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association.

ANDY MAY:
Veteran singer/songwriter and champion guitarist Andy May has been described as "a troubadour of life" (Walnut Valley Festival). May infuses his songwriting and shows with his trademark creativity, humor, and consummate musicianship. His music embraces styles from blues to Bluegrass, classic country to contemporary folk, rock-a-billy to roots. May started performing seriously in his teens, immersed in and a part of the '60's Folk Revival in New York's Greenwich Village. Making a name from himself there as an up-and-coming old-time musician and songwriter, and later in New England as a folk-rock original, May's reputation has grown to include his extensive work as an educator. May also started and runs the Ibma Award-winning record label and production company, Swift River Music.
