The Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival proudly returns this fall for the 15th season! Beginning September 7 at Old Cabell Hall the festival will continue a longstanding tradition of bringing to the area a wide variety of classical music to be enjoyed by all. Led by a group of internationally acclaimed musicians, this year’s program will take the audience on a listening journey through time as we travel from historical places in Europe through contemporary America.

Artistic CoDirectors and Charlottesville natives Raphael Bell and Timothy Summers return to central Virginia with a group of exceptional musicians from the United States and Europe. Newcomers to the Festival include pianist Steven Beck, mezzosoprano Virpi Räsänen, and trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts, all of whom have enjoyed international success and received critical acclaim. Returning musicians include violinist Jennifer Koh, cellist Edward Arron, pianist Benjamin Hochman, and flautist Sooyun Kim, rising stars who have dazzled the classical music world. This fierce group of talent will perform the works of Vivaldi, Mozart, Brahms, Schubert, and more, and are excited to bring you such pieces as Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 as well as Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, both of which have been arranged for chamber orchestra. While being taken through a musical tour across Europe, the audience will also hear contemporary and experimental works of Steve Reich and Luciano Berio, as well as new American chamber works, thus taking the audience from places like historic Vienna, further into the past, and finally to the present.

Like last year, we will present a fourday weekend of concerts beginning Thursday, September 11 at the Paramount through Sunday, September 14 at Old Cabell Hall. On Saturday, September 13, the group will perform contemporary works at The Southern on the downtown mall, a concert that festivalgoers will remember as a modern performance that challenges the traditional concepts of sound. The following Thursday, September 18, at the Paramount, the Festival will present a free lunchtime concert open to the public, and then end the series that evening with new American chamber works and Brahms.

With so many performances to offer over the span of two weeks, the Festival hopes to reach out to an even bigger audience than ever before! Residents and travellers will not be disappointed as they experience remarkable talent right here in the heart of Charlottesville, and the heart of downtown.
